My cat had even more names than that. The official Oscar (Wilde), to ratbag, pain, you little s**t and you overfed, spoiled little brute. All dependent upon his most recent action. You could guarantee though that while you were shouting it was either to his fast disappearing tail, to him sitting there licking himself and totally ignoring you, to sitting there with a self satisfied smirk on his face, usually the latter. He of course never considered himself other than ‘A Superior’.

Choosing a cat name is always difficult. Mostly I keep the shelter name if the cat recognizes it. I am inclined to call my cat Scooby “Red” or refer to him like that, but he responds to his real name only so it must stay. With multiple cats I try to avoid names similar sounding or with the same first letter. I do not expect to be naming any cats soon.
We have a children’s book of Eliot’s cat poems. They’re wonderful. My daughter passed it on to the grandson. It’s on its third generation. Great poem – so that’s what my cat is doing!
I agree, tone of voice is paramount. Many years ago I read that cats react to names beginning with “S”. Maybe my first pet in a previous life was called Sabre Tooth Tiger 😉 😀 ❤
We loved the Naming of a Cat. Mom feels a name should be dignified and be something impressive like the cat itself. A name the cat can live up to. A silly name doesn’t show the dignified cat but makes fun of her. MOL
Some years ago when we had a barn full of horses, stray cats would take up refuge in the warmth of the hay and constant supply of mice. I would always make sure those strays had extra food and water.
I mentioned to my wife about the cats, so she came out one evening to check on them.
There were four cats that day and she asked if I had named them. I said sure, that brown one is “Furry”, the grey is called “Furry”, the calico up there, “Furry”, and this peach coloured one is “Furry”.
Not amused she preceded to think up names for them. (that I never used. Actually I never called ’em by a name)
Now that I read that wonderful prom by T.S. Eliot. (And I thank you for that.) I am sure those barn cats new their name and were sure I did too. It wasn’t that big of deal to us.
You are right! My cat is a precocious one, in May she’s going to be 14, but I still have a hard time with her name. I simply snap my fingers or tap a can!
So, THAT’S where that quote comes from in Logan’s Run.

As one who has owned multiple cats, they are truly a unique pet deserving of their own unique name. Loved the poem. Thanks for sharing.

My landlady found an abandoned calico standing in ice and snow, and she asked me to take her in. Her name is Icicle.

Icicle is with me. She’s about a year old now, plump, healthy and playful.

Cats are also named with states of being and personality such as: “Who’s a lovely cat? Yes, you are! Yes, you are!”
